WhatsApp for Android/iOS: End-to-End encrypted cloud backups

WhatsApp for Android/iOS: End-to-end encrypted cloud backups are currently being tested by WhatsApp. According to a source, the update is now being rolled out to beta testers on Android and iOS. WhatsApp’s latest version gives users the option to encrypt backups saved to Google Drive and iCloud. A new layer of protection is being added to WhatsApp backups, including chat history and media assets. Separately, the instant messaging app was seen revamping the contact information part of the app on Android, which may soon be made accessible to beta testers.

Facebook-owned messaging service WhatsApp has begun testing end-to-end encrypted cloud backups on iPhones via WhatsApp for iOS beta version 2.21.200.14, according to WABetaInfo, a website that monitors WhatsApp beta versions. Select beta testers of WhatsApp for Android beta version 2.21.21.5 are believed to have been receiving the end-to-end encrypted backup option from WhatsApp. Also Read: Instagram Rebrands IGTV As Instagram TV

As of last month, WhatsApp is offering optional end-to-end encrypted cloud backups for chat history and media assets stored on Google Drive or iCloud. The news broke months after WhatsApp had been seen internally testing the function. However, there’s no word yet on when the feature will be made accessible to end-users by the instant messaging software.

It is possible to secure your WhatsApp chat content from third parties by activating end-to-end encrypted backups. This includes Google and Apple, which provide cloud storage for backups. End-to-end encryption, according to WhatsApp, means that not even the company’s engineers can access the content of the backups.

For further security, users must create and store a unique password for each backup they create. If a user loses their phone because they forgot their password, they won’t be able to recover it from an encrypted backup.

End-to-end encryption may now be added to backups using WhatsApp instead of generating a new password each time. It looks that encryption key support for Android beta testers isn’t currently available, according to pictures supplied by WABetaInfo. The newest WhatsApp beta for Android smartphones did not have an update available to Gadgets 360 when it was tested.

It has been discovered that WhatsApp is developing a new contact info area for Android users that includes the Chat, Audio and Video buttons now located underneath the photo of their contacts, in addition to end-to-end encrypted backups. An image from WABetaInfo suggests a makeover. WhatsApp for Android beta 2.21.21.6 is said to have the upgrade, although no visible changes have been made even in the most recent beta version.

When you touch on a contact’s or group’s profile photo in your chat list, WhatsApp’s new contact/group card interface displays. The contact or group’s profile photo appeared underneath chat, audio, and video buttons on that card.
