WhatsApp users would need to verify their documents to make payments

WhatsApp users who make payments over the service may soon be required to provide identification to the company. In accordance with an APK breakdown, the WhatsApp beta version 2.21.22.6 contains new strings that point to the implementation of a verification mechanism.

WhatsApp Pay was first accessible to customers in India last year, and it is now available worldwide. WhatsApp does not yet require users to validate their identity and instead authenticates their payments using cell numbers in India, at least for the time being.

“Your identity could not be validated,” stated the strings discovered by XDA developers during the APK disassembly. “Please try uploading the papers again,” and “Please verify your identification in order to continue utilising WhatsApp payments.” Other Unified Payments Interface (UPI) apps, like as PhonePe and Google Pay, do not need users to authenticate their identity before processing their payments.

In order to use some applications, such as Paytm and MobiKwik, users must complete their know your customer (KYC) authentication process. In Brazil, WhatsApp Pay requires users to validate payments using Facebook Pay before they may proceed.

Although WhatsApp has not made an official announcement, the strings suggest that the service may be preparing to bring out either a new Wallet system or the ability for users to make payments directly through the app. WhatsApp’s user interface (UI) for users who have selected the payment option was altered earlier this month to reflect this.

The Facebook-owned firm said that it has begun incorporating the rupee sign in its chat composer in order to make transmitting payments over WhatsApp easier for users in the country’s financial system.

WhatsApp stated that the inclusion of the rupee sign icon in its chat composer will make it easier for individuals to send money to their friends and make payments using the app, particularly for Indian users who speak the language of the programme in their home tongue. WhatsApp also announced that the camera icon in the Composer may now be used to scan any QR code, enabling users to pay at more than 20 million shops throughout India.

In November of last year, WhatsApp gained authorisation from the National Payments Corporation of India to begin accepting payments through the Unified Payments Interface (UPI). WhatsApp was also said to be working on a pay return option for customers of WhatsApp Payments in India, according to reports.

Apparently, customers who make payments using WhatsApp Payments will soon be eligible for cashback, according to the company. According to the article, the capability will be made available in a future update and will only be relevant to UPI payments going forward.
