Xiaomi ranks second in the global smartphone market after Samsung

According to the most recent Worldwide Quarterly Mobile shipments (global smartphone market) report from International Data Corporation (IDC), Samsung maintained its position as the world’s leading smartphone manufacturer in Q2 2021

While Xiaomi had the most significant increase. Xiaomi has surpassed Apple into second place for the first time in the second quarter of 2021, pushing the latter into third place.

The drop in Huawei’s smartphone shipments, along with LG’s decision to quit the smartphone sector, resulted in a minor movement in market positions this quarter.

Over the course of the year, overall shipping volumes increased 13.2 per cent, slightly above IDC’s projection of 12.5 per cent growth.

During the third quarter, smartphone manufacturers shipped a total of 313.2 million units.

According to IDC, Samsung delivered 59 million devices in the second quarter of 2021, acquiring a market share of 18.8 per cent and establishing itself as the leading vendor.

In the same quarter of the previous year, the South Korean behemoth shipped 54 million devices. Xiaomi, on the other hand, had a substantial year-over-year rise in shipments, shipping 53.1 million devices in Q2 2021 and capturing 16.9 per cent of the market.

This represents a significant increase from the 28.5 million units delivered in the same quarter last year, representing a market share of 10.3 per cent. Shipments have increased by 86.6 per cent year on year for the remaining firms.

According to IDC, Apple has climbed up to third place in the market with 44.2 million shipments and a 14.1 per cent market share.

Apple sold 37.6 million devices in the same period last year, capturing a 13.6 per cent share of the worldwide market.

Oppo and Vivo were ranked third and fourth on IDC’s list, respectively, with 32.8 million and 31.6 million units shipped, according to the company. In terms of market share, both smartphone makers received 10.5 per cent and 10.1 per cent, respectively.

In the markets where Huawei and LG are most dominant (China and the United States), the firms’ possibilities of increasing market share are very different.

Because of LG’s departure, according to IDC, Motorola, TCL, and OnePlus all had year-over-year growth that was above and above what they had seen in previous years in the United States.

As a result of Huawei’s fast fall in China, companies such as Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, and Apple have continued to benefit.

According to IDC, the Chinese brand Realme saw the highest year-over-year growth among the top 10 smartphone brands, growing by 149 per cent, with more than three-quarters of its volume originating from markets outside China.
